Starting a Wound Care Program
The clinical experts at Johnson & Johnson Medical Inc. (JJMI) frequently answer
questions about how to develop a wound management program so, at the recent symposium on
Advanced Wound Care, JJMI sponsored a post conference on "Wound Care Everywhere:
Clinics, Subacute, Long-Term, and Home Health Care."
Speakers gave this advice - good for any setting:
- Develop a detailed business plan outlining the needs of the community, your base of
potential customers, your marketing strategies, the scope of the program, and the required
staffing level. Be prepared to justify the purpose and the need for your program. Also,
draft a mission statement, which will clarify goals and objectives and keep the program on
target over time.
- Develop research-based clinical protocols and algorithms- they're the backbone of any
wound management program.
- Collect data to determine clinical and economic outcomes. This will be particularly
important in managed-care environments.
